HDR – Why all the hype? 122/136

I’ve seen some spectacular HDR shots but not mine. I spent significant time today taking pictures and processing them in Photomatrix and I don’t understand the hype. At best I see all aspects of a photo, good mid-tones, highlights, and shadow detail. But that’s not always the case. Perhaps it’s my subjects, which have all been close ups. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try a building or a landscape. Here is a sample of my efforts. Any advice to offer?
The top photo is HDR processed while the second one is the properly exposed shot of the 3 used to create the HDR.
